2016-17 Volunteer Opportunities

ADVOCACY
Work with PTA Board to advocate for our students on a variety of issues via correspondence and community meeting attendance. Contact: Rachael Parran (rdparren@gmail.com)

ART PORTFOLIO HELPERS
Assist art teachers with making the large, paper portfolios used by the children to bring home their artwork. Chairperson: Stacy Klingenberg‐Gilligan (boxerlady71@gmail.com)

BLOOD DRIVE
Help with planning and setting up for the spring and fall blood drives. Assist during the blood drives at Jacksonville Elementary School with check in, serving refreshments, etc. Chairpersons: Jennifer Hazlehurst (jennifer_hazlehurst@verizon.net) & Lindsay Nixon (nixon393@live.com)

BOX TOPS
Box Tops, Labels for Education, and Tyson Project A+, make a big difference at JES! Help us count and submit them to earn thousands of dollars for our school and spread the word about these programs. Counting can be done at home – usually 2 hours/month. Chairperson: Whitney Leber (wepleber@comcast.net)

CAFETERIA HELPERS
Assist lunchroom aides by handing out utensils and opening pre-packaged items for students. Each day we have two, 1 hour and 15 minute shifts, and we need 1-2 volunteers per shift. A “JES Cafeteria Helpers” Sign-Up Genius Website has been created for the 2016-2017 school year for your flexibility and advance planning. This is a fun way to volunteer throughout the year and see your child in a more relaxed social setting with their friends. Chairperson: Laura Hartman (lhartman@chaibaltimore.org)

CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER
Assist with teacher-directed activities in the classroom. Sign-ups will be provided by your teacher and/or Room Parent. Opportunities are offered at the discretion of each teacher.

CULTURAL ASSEMBLIES

FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT 
Assist in planning and/or volunteering during the fall kick‐off event – Family Science / S.T.E.A.M. Night. Chairpersons: Christina Michael (cmichael0609@verizon.net); Whitney Leber (wepleber@comcast.net)

FUNDRAISING

GREEN SCHOOL AND RECYCLING
Assist Green School faculty committee with various activities through the year, including cafeteria drink pouch recycling, classroom marker recycling, JES gardening, Earth Day, etc. Chairperson: Chris Eary (chriseary@verizon.net); Elizabeth McCarthy (elizm42@gmail.com)

HEALTH SUITE
Assisting school nurse with non-health care related duties such as escorting students for hearing/vision screens, bulletin boards, photocopying, and other miscellaneous duties. Chairperson: Melissa DuCroix, School Nurse, (mducroix@bcps.org) 410.683.8351

HOSPITALITY
Do you like cooking or baking (or have a favorite bakery that does it for you) or enjoy being a “hostess with the mostest”? Throughout the year, we will be hosting a bunch of fun events for parents and teachers and staff. We act as greeters and provide goodies during American Education Week. We also show our gratitude for the teachers and staff by hosting our annual “Souper Bowl” and our Teacher Appreciation Week breakfast and luncheon. INTERNATIONAL NIGHT
Plan and implement preparations for International Night 2017. A wonderful celebration of our world and it’s many cultures! Chairperson: Colleen Kilchenstein (colleenkilch@gmail.com)

LIBRARY
Help with shelving books, checking books in and out for the students and various other activities throughout the year. Assist with annual Book Fair (Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, 2015). Chairperson: Erin Graff (erinspring@yahoo.com)

OUTREACH
Plan and implement programs to help children develop values and social consciousness throughout the year. Includes the Outreach Club, Beans and Bread, clothing drives, holiday gift drives and various other charitable events to help our community and JES families. Many activities suitable to do with your preschooler. Chairperson: Alicia Matesa (almatesa@yahoo.com)

PICTURE PARENT
Spend some enriching time with your child’s class! PICTURE PARENT is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to engage with the kids and introduce an artist and bring their work into our classrooms. All grades needed – No art experience necessary! Chairpersons: Cheryl Creamer (cheryl.creamer@verizon.net)

READING ROOM
Assist children with reading in the Ben Carson Reading Room. It will be staffed from 11-2pm, Monday through Thursday. Chairperson: Allison Townsend (allisontownsend@verizon.net)

RESOURCE ROOM
Laminate, duplicate and prepare materials for teachers throughout the year. You may stop in at any time on your scheduled day to complete the tasks. You can sign up on the days that work best for you. Chairperson: Erin Graff (erinspring@yahoo.com)

ROOM PARENT
Room Parents are responsible for lending/coordinating assistance to the teachers in the classroom. Helping to plan class parties and other activities throughout the year. See your individual homeroom teachers when school starts back! Chairperson: Lisa Clemmer (VPVolunteers@JESPTA.org)

SCHOOL STORE
We are excited to once again offer JES students the opportunity to support their school by purchasing fun school supplies at our school store.
5TH grade students and parents needed to run school store on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings (October to May) from 9:00 to 9:20am. Chairpersons: Alicia Matesa (almatesa@yahoo.com)

SPIRIT WEAR

SPRING CARNIVAL

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
Help to create theme for JES Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week in the spring. Decorate the school and make the week special for the teachers that do so much for our kids! Chairperson: Lisa Clemmer (VPVolunteers@JESPTA.org)

YEARBOOK EVENTS PHOTOGRAPHER
Volunteers needed for picture taking throughout the year. Must love photography, feel comfortable operating a digital camera and be capable of saving and sending digital photos. Meeting to assign photographers to specific events and to review camera settings will take place in September. Chairperson: Amy Bachran (abachran@gmail.com)
